Teeth Whitening

Teeth Whitening

You may not know this, but teeth have tiny pores all over them, just like your skin or a sponge. This means that they can absorb small amounts of any substance they come into contact with.

When you drink coffee, tea, soda or red wine, they stain and darken the color of your teeth over time. Sadly, once teeth are discolored, they'll remain that way unless they receive proper treatment.

Fortunately, you have options. Rizkalla Dental Associates of Plymouth is here to bring radiance back to your smile.

Whitening Methods

When it comes to brightening your smile, there are multiple paths you can take. As you are aware, there are numerous over-the-counter whitening treatments available for at-home use. However, it should be noted that not all of these are from reputable companies, and few of them are as safe and dependably effective as in-office treatments administered by a dentist.

Whitening methods can be broken down into two essential categories. Even though whitening and bleaching are used interchangeably, they are actually two distinct treatments.

Whitening is the use of gels that are absorbed by the teeth, which then gently push out the offending stains.

Bleaching is the use of a peroxide solution which allows oxygen to penetrate your dental enamel and break apart the chemical bonds between stains. This method has the added benefit of brightening your teeth beyond their natural color.

What Can You Expect?

At Rizkalla Dental Associates, whitening treatments typically take place over multiple visits. We are able to offer top brands that we can vouch for, such as Opalescence.

The first step is to make a mold or detailed scan of your teeth. This provides us with the exact shape and size we need for the trays used during the process. Once we have these trays, the whitening gel is applied to them to be placed over your soon-to-be pearly whites.

These procedures can be done in-office, or you can be provided with a take-home kit with instructions to follow. The process usually takes several treatments over the course of a few weeks, until the desired level of brightness is achieved.

Side Effects

It is common for many patients to experience sensitivity of the teeth and gums after treatment. This is normal and temporary. After a short time, the sensitivity will subside.

It is important to note, however, that overuse of whitening products can be detrimental to your dental health. Not only can excessive use lead to more serious sensitivity issues, but they can actually permanently damage your enamel and in severe cases, cause structural damage and brittle teeth.
